About the Item

This exceptional German Baroque “Wellenschrank” wardrobe was crafted around 1720 and represents one of the most iconic furniture forms of the period. Developed in Frankfurt during the mid-17th century, the Wellenschrank quickly became a hallmark of Baroque cabinetmaking, recognized for its distinctive undulating façade created by alternating convex and concave mouldings. The wardrobe is constructed with a pinewood corpus and veneered in richly figured walnut, displaying a vivid grain and warm patina that highlight the artistry of early 18th-century German craftsmen. The façade is framed by bold architectural profiles, giving the piece its monumental presence. A rare feature is the survival of all original locks, hinges, fittings, and even the original key – details that emphasize its authenticity and museum quality. The interior is fitted with adjustable compartments and shelves, offering versatility for modern use while preserving its historic character. The cabinet is fully demountable for transport and consists of base, side panels, top, two doors, and back sections. A striking example of Baroque design for collectors, connoisseurs, and interiors of distinction.
