Overview This exceptional 19th-century Japanese Mizuya Tansu (traditional kitchen cabinet) is a striking example of Meiji-era craftsmanship, blending functional storage with a bold, organic aesthetic. Originally used in Japanese homes to store ceramic wares and daily essentials, this piece has evolved into a sophisticated statement furniture for contemporary interiors. Design & Texture: The Art of "Uzukuri" The most captivating feature of this cabinet is the pair of large sliding doors. These panels showcase a spectacular, swirling grain pattern achieved through the traditional "Uzukuri" technique. By meticulously brushing the surface of the wood to remove the softer springwood, the harder autumnal grain is left raised in high relief. This process creates a dramatic, three-dimensional texture that catches the light beautifully, highlighting the natural "landscape" of the wood. Construction & Details • Material: Built from aged Japanese cedar (Sugi) and zelkova (Keyaki), the wood has developed a rich, dark patina over a century of use. • Hardware: The lower drawers are adorned with hand-forged iron "warabite" handles and decorative backplates, providing a robust contrast to the warm wood tones. Part of the handle has been repaired with an old, thin iron rod, and some parts do not have the original fittings. • Versatility: The upper sliding doors open to reveal spacious shelving, while the five drawers of varying sizes offer ample storage. Its clean lines and rustic elegance make it an ideal sideboard, media console, or hallway focal point. Condition Report Excellent antique condition. The structure is solid, and the sliding doors and drawers operate smoothly. The surface bears the authentic character marks and wear consistent with its age, further enhancing its wabi-sabi charm.
