About the Item

A wonderful Jacobean oak chest with a two over three drawer configuration and great surface, featuring what appear to be original drop pulls and brass escutcheons, relief star and border drawer front decoration, resting on a short frame with four turned feet. Dates to the 17th century in good condition, with corner and frame repairs and restorations, replacements, slight warp to the top, edge losses, surface refinish, and wear commensurate with age and use. Dimensions (with frame): 41 in H x 37.5 in W x 21 in D. Ref: 8

England, ca. late 17th century. A fabulous antique Jacobean or Charles II style chest on stand. Features solid oak construction with a planked top with moulded edge above two small and two large geometrically paneled drawers. Cast brass drop handles and escutcheons are most likely replacements but are period and stylistically correct. (This is not uncommon as brasses were often sold or melted down in times of conflict.) Supported by an unusual separate arched base that includes two narrow drawers and turned bun feet. An attractive survivor perfectly suited to a variety of interiors, we were drawn to the piece’s dark finish and dramatic - yet lovely - presence.
