Doshi Lieven Chandlo Dressing Table

About the Item

‘Chandlo’ means moon shape and also Bindi that is the colored dot worn by Indian women on the forehead to which the large rimmed mirror of ‘Chandlo’ makes reference. The dressing table was designed as a special prototype made by BD Barcelona for Das Haus 2012. This was an installation by Doshi Levien for IMM Cologne that explored Jonathan and Nipa’s vision of a perfect home. Das Haus consisted of interconnected spaces opening up to a central courtyard. The different areas of the home depended mainly on objects and furniture to define space. ‘Chandlo’ was situated in the dressing space with an architectural juxtaposition of forms and planes to be viewed from all sides. ‘Chandlo’ celebrates the enjoyment of getting dressed and the importance of personal grooming as part of our daily well being ritual. The seemingly abstract composition of the mirrors, cabinet and surface is based on the gestures and daily ritual of dressing up and grooming. Our intention was to create a composition in which the elements are holding each other in position without actually touching. To maintain the simplicity of this deconstructed arrangement, we had to conceal the production methods and this presented many challenges overcome masterfully by BD Barcelona Design. The precision, alignment and quality of making that contributes to the effortless nature of Chandlo allowed us to bring together the different materials in this abstract composition. The dressing table is accompanied by a banquette and a stool with silver embroidered lines on leather cushions. The geometric forms, materials and colors of Chandlo reference the work Of Bauhaus and De Stijl artists Hans Richter, Max Buchartz, Theo van Doesburg and El Lizzitsky. Dressing table: Structure in solid ash fitted out in black matte. The table legs are tubular steel, painted in a brilliant green. The solid, compact tabletop (mixed natural minerals and polymers) is in a light grey. There is a central, frontal faced mirror, which is composed of a steel frame, painted in red. The back of the mirror is black MDF painted with a graphic pattern in brilliant white. The side mirror has a filtered rose color. The jewellery box in plywood (walnut). Stool: Structure in plywood (rosewood) and legs in steel, painted in brillant black. Upholstered in dark grey with a bordered grid, in an aluminium color. Dressing table: 65 x 165 x H 144 cm Stool: Ø 43 x H 45 cm Year: 2012 Doshi Levien is a London based design office led by Jonathan Levien and Nipa Doshi, established in 2000. Doshi Levien’s work celebrates the hybrid and explores the coming together of cultures, technology, story telling, Industrial Design and Fine craftsmanship. Nipa’s refined and astute visual direction is combined with Jonathan’s precision and tenacity as an Industrial designer. Doshi Levien work across disciplines and industries, they make their own rules that are based on extracting as much richness as possible out of an idea. The studio gives expert advice to global brands on cultural and social insights, leading to design opportunities. Doshi Levien work for a broad range of clients, including Intel, Swarovski, Nokia, Authentics, Moroso, Cappellini and now BD Barcelona Design.
