Exceptional Viennese Biedermeier Chest of Drawers, Vienna, circa 1820 An exceptional and highly refined Viennese Biedermeier chest of drawers, crafted in Vienna circa 1820. This rare example represents the very best of early Austrian Biedermeier cabinetmaking — a period celebrated for its architectural clarity, harmonious proportions, and the masterful use of fine native woods. The elegantly proportioned two-drawer commode is veneered in superb book-matched walnut, revealing an extraordinary natural grain with remarkable depth and warmth. The veneer is preserved in an outstanding state of conservation, free from visible restorations or repairs, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to speak for itself. Over two centuries, the surface has developed a magnificent original patina, further enriched by a traditional hand-applied French polish, creating a luminous, almost three-dimensional effect in the walnut grain — a hallmark of the finest Viennese furniture of the period. Particularly noteworthy are the beautiful original brass fittings, which remain intact and contribute significantly to the authenticity and collector’s value of the piece.
