About the Item

A handsome and well-proportioned George III period double chest of drawers, crafted in richly figured mahogany over a solid oak frame and retaining a beautifully aged, warm patina throughout. The molded hinged rectangular top above a banded and line-inlaid frieze and two false drawers over four long drawers flanked by pilasters on shaped bracket feet. Each drawer is framed with fine line inlay that lends subtle refinement and visual rhythm across the front. The original brass swan neck pulls and shaped escutcheons remain intact, complementing the depth of the mahogany and reinforcing the piece’s authenticity. Fluted quarter columns to the sides add a touch of neoclassical structure, terminating in a molded base raised on shaped bracket feet. The sides and back, constructed in oak, speak to traditional 18th-century English cabinetmaking practices, while the drawer construction and wear are consistent with the period. The interior shows honest use, with smooth drawer action and a pleasing, time-softened finish. A versatile and substantial piece, equally suited to a bedroom, entry, or living space—offering generous storage with the quiet elegance characteristic of the late 18th century.

18th Century George I Walnut Tallboy Chest-on-Stand, England

18th Century George I Walnut Tallboy Chest-on-Stand, England

Located in Houston, TX

A superb early 18th-century George I walnut "tallboy" chest-on-stand, featuring exquisite oyster walnut veneers. Early oyster walnut chest-on-stands are scarce. The upper section consists of two short over three long graduated drawers, each meticulously book-matched to show the concentric grain patterns characteristic of the period. The drawers are framed by delicate feather-banding and retain their high-quality, period-correct brass batwing escutcheons and drop handles. The chest sits upon its original stand, which houses a single deep long drawer above a beautifully shaped, arched apron. The piece is elevated by elegant cabriole legs terminating in refined pad feet, providing a sophisticated silhouette that balances the visual weight of the upper case. The sides are finished in solid walnut with a rich, deep patina. The construction features traditional hand-cut dovetails and pegged joints, consistent with early 17th to 18th century cabinetmaking. This piece is a testament to the "Golden Age" of English walnut furniture...
