About the Item

Hand-carved circa 1880, this tall four-drawer commode features a striking serpentine façade, which was a hallmark of the fluid, Swedish Rococo style. The pine has been scraped, revealing some fascinating whorled grains in the beige wood. Faint traces of the original finish are still visible in the form of white and brown accents, as well as gilding on the moldings. Each of the drawers is fronted by a pair of bronze handles flanking a keyplate, all in the form of asymmetrical leaf clusters. Once again, the shape of the hardware is associated with the Rococo period, which was heavily inspired by France. Four sinuous roquillard legs with pad feet support the chest of drawers beneath a thick apron adorned with a scalloped shell and curled leaf margents. Our scraped pine Swedish commode exudes elegance, perfectly balancing the ornate stylings of French Rococo with an organic warmth associated with Scandinavian furniture from the 19th century.
