There are pieces of furniture that politely occupy space, and then there are pieces that seem to remember every room they’ve ever stood in. This Italian corner cupboard—over two centuries old—belongs very firmly to the second group. Built in the early 19th century, possibly earlier, this burled walnut corner cabinet was designed with a clear understanding of both architecture and human behavior. Corners, after all, are awkward things. They get ignored. They collect dust. This cupboard solves that problem by turning the corner into the most interesting part of the room. With its gently bowed façade and architectural presence, it does what good furniture has always done: it improves the situation without asking permission. The burled walnut veneer is the real star here, swirling with deep, organic figuring that looks less like wood grain and more like a landscape seen from above.
