About the Item

This nice and compact-sized buffet with glazed doors comes from the Normandy region in France and was made, circa 1770 during the reign of Louis XV. Created using dark stained oak a difficult wood to carve the piece is centered on its carved and projecting cornice with a carved basket of flowers. Extending from this are relief carved floral sprays and leaves extending out along the cabinets upper section. Associated floral and leaf carving moved down over the upper and lower sections of the doors and on to the enclosed cabinet at the bottom. The piece retains its original polished steel escutcheons and locks. Constructed in a time-honored fashion with mortise and tenon with pegs the piece easily comes apart for easy moving into two large pieces and all the doors remove from the hinges making it light and simple to manage. Of note the glazed upper doors retain the original hand-rolled glass panes. A shaped apron adds further individuality and grace. The cabinet stands on elegant Louis XV feet and retains wonderfully balanced proportions that offer both visual lightness and practical functionality. The sides are attractively paneled, and both upper and lower sections retain their original oak backboards. Throughout, the oak displays beautiful grain patterns and a warm honey coloured patina developed over centuries of use.
