Mid-Century Modern Compartment Desk Faux Wood Laminate Chrome Aluminium

Awesome Mid-Century Modern compartment desk in faux wood laminate, chrome tube, and cast aluminium. This desk is in wonderful vintage condition. The laminate is perfect as is the painted aluminium feet; however, the chrome tube had quite a bit of rust which we have eliminated but you can still see a little pitting. It retains the original “hang tag” from when it was for sale new by Modern Living and the original slide-in calendar from 1967-1968, circa 1967. What an incredible piece of furniture but try as we might we cannot determine its maker. It has attributes of the Action Office desk designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller. It also looks similar to a Compartment desk by Lane. And the materials used, and the leg style are almost surely Chromcraft. Plus, there is a hang tag with the name Modern Living. But we have yet been able to find one like it. No matter! It is fabulous and in extremely great original condition. The cabinet is made up of faux wood laminate with a full-length drawer in the front and a flip-up door on the back of the top surface that exposes a compartment for hanging file folders. On the underside of the flip-up door, which makes it the part facing you as you sit at the desk, is a slide-in plastic office helper consisting of a calendar dated 1967-1968, a place to inventory the folders in the files below, and a to-do list plus more. The cabinet is supported by a pair of column legs of chromed steel tubes with cast aluminium faux woodgrain and painted black bi-pod legs or feet. A wonderful Mid-Century Modern desk that will work perfectly with your laptop. You need to make it yours. MCM Desk by Robert John Co. Walnut & White Painted Steel Frame & Laminate Top

Handsome Mid-Century Modern smaller writing desk by the Robert John Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania featuring walnut cabinet with white painted steel frame and white laminate top. This is from their Steelwood collection. It desk is in wonderful restored condition. We have sanded and put a new finish on the walnut and the metal frame. The laminate has been cleaned and polished. There are still signs of age but nothing major. Please see photos, circa 1960s. This wonderful Mid-Century Modern smaller size office desk has been a real puzzle. It has taken much research and I’m still not sure I know about the Robert John Co. from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their tag says Makers of Contemporary Furniture and that this desk is. When I google them all I come up with is other pieces of furniture being offered that were made by them, but I can’t find any history on the company. And, several listings say the piece was designed by Robert John but made by Knoll. I have not found supporting evidence of that statement! No matter. This is a fabulous desk with a walnut box cabinet containing three equal size drawers that are adorned with cool black and white handles. It is surrounded by a white painted metal frame which accents the walnut wonderfully and a white laminate work surface. This was originally in an architect’s office. I can see why. It has awesome lines and is beautifully designed. This desk is just the right size for a home office. Not as big as an executive desk but a little bigger than a writing desk. Fabulous!
