About the Item

Two-bay modular wall unit attributed to William Watting for Fristho, constructed in teak with brass hardware throughout. Three tapered teak upright posts support six adjustable shelves across both bays, with each shelf resting on brass brackets. The unit's most distinctive detail is the circular teak target motif centered on each knob, a raised round teak surround framing a tapered brass pull. The left bay incorporates a cabinet module with two doors and three drawers, each carrying the same ring-pull hardware. Fristho, based in Franeker in the Netherlands, produced well-regarded Mid-Century teak furniture through the 1950s and 1960s. William Watting's modular wall systems for the firm were characterized by restrained detailing, considered proportions, and the kind of flexible storage logic that defined Dutch modernism in that period. The two-bay format shown here reflects the system's expandable nature. The unit has been lightly refinished and shows wear consistent with age and use.
