About the Item

J.A.D.A Galerie present: French workshop, three door sideboard, oak, France, 1940s. Each of the three doors is framed by a wide chamfer cut back to a truncated pyramid, and at the centre of each sits a panel carved in low relief with a stylised bouquet. The three compositions are not repeats. Wheat ears rise behind full blown flowers on one, lanceolate foliage gathers around a ribboned stem on another, and the third turns the same elements into a tighter, more upright arrangement. The cutting is shallow and precise, worked flat rather than modelled, which keeps the drawing legible against the pale timber. Between the doors and at the outer angles, the uprights are reeded in stacked horizontal grooves, a small piece of geometry that answers the softness of the carving and pulls the front back towards Art Deco order. The escutcheons are vertical, cast in patinated bronze with the same stepped fluting, and they read as deliberate design rather than as hardware. The top is a separate plank set on a stepped return so it appears to float above the case, and its edge is eased rather than sharp. Below, the sideboard sits on an applied base whose uprights are cut with a shallow sabre curve, and the apron is shaped along its lower edge with a single carved scroll placed at the centre. The sides carry one large plain fielded panel each, left uncarved so the front holds the eye. The oak is solid throughout and finished naturally, pale and honey toned, with the grain and ray fleck open across the doors and the top. Behind the doors, shelving runs the width of the case. Furniture of this kind came from French workshops in the years around the war, when cabinetmakers set a carved floral repertoire inherited from regional joinery inside the geometry of the Art Deco. Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and use. Measurements: W 180 cm x D 54 cm x H 99 cm.
