About the Item

Details Vintage Italian Console Table Rosewood Black metal frame and supports Italy, c.1955 Measurements Height 98 cm (38.6 in) Length 191 cm (75.2 in) Depth 48 cm (18.9 in) Drawer Depth 40 cm (15.7 in) Drawer Width 56 cm (22 in) Dating from circa 1955, this vintage Italian console table is a distinctive example of post-war Italian furniture design, combining richly figured rosewood with a slender black metal structure and an unusual layered architectural form. The console is defined by its elongated rosewood body and raised upper surface, creating a sequence of strong horizontal planes with an almost floating quality. The pronounced natural figuring of the rosewood extends across the front and upper surfaces, bringing warmth, movement and depth to the restrained geometry of the design. Below, slender black metal supports provide a visually light counterpoint to the substantial timber body. The juxtaposition of richly figured rosewood, dark metal and elongated proportions is characteristic of the sophisticated material experimentation found in Italian furniture of the 1950s, with stylistic affinities to the work of designers including Vittorio Dassi. The stepped construction is particularly distinctive. Rather than presenting a conventional single console surface, the elevated upper plane creates depth and separation between the different levels, giving the piece an architectural quality when viewed both frontally and in profile. Integrated drawers provide discreet practical storage while maintaining the strong horizontal lines of the design. Produced in Italy circa 1955, the console captures the material richness, precise proportions and experimentation with structure associated with Italian mid-century modern design. Its long, low profile and combination of substantial rosewood with a visually light metal base give the piece a particularly sculptural presence.
