About the Item

This is an exquisite piece of furniture, specifically a neoclassical bar or cocktail cabinet, most likely dating to the mid-20th century (1948). It draws strong inspiration from the Italian “Stile Littorio” and represents a refined work by Paolo Buffa at the height of his artistic expression. Humanity really did peak when cabinetmakers obsessed over proportions instead of subscription apps. Here is a detailed description of what makes this piece unique: Artistic Panels (Grisaille Style) The most striking feature is the series of six panels decorating the front doors. Executed in grisaille (monochromatic technique), they depict scenes inspired by classical mythology and antiquity. The doors contain six engravings set within specially designed “windows,” based on drawings by the painters Andrea Appiani, Michele Bisi, and Giuseppe Longhi, illustrating the triumphs and glories of Napoleon. Technique: They appear to be high-quality lithographs or hand-painted panels, framed behind glass with gilded borders. Their purpose is to evoke the appearance of ancient bas-reliefs or carved stone cameos. Wood and Construction The cabinet is veneered in fine walnut with a striking vertical grain. The book-matched veneer, where the grain mirrors itself symmetrically across the doors, is indicative of exceptional craftsmanship. The form is compact and rectangular, supported by four slender square-section legs ending in metal feet, presumably brass. The upper edge features a finely carved dentil molding with small vertical grooves, a direct reference to classical architecture. Because apparently even furniture in the 1940s needed architectural credentials. Interior The interior was conceived for high-level entertaining and formal receptions. It is lined with mirrors designed to reflect glassware and light, while the doors incorporate specialized glass shelves with notched supports specifically created to securely hold stemware and crystal glasses. Legs and Hardware The cabinet stands on elegant tapered sabre legs with brass feet, a hallmark of mid-century Italian neoclassical design. Historical Context During the mid-20th century, particularly in Italy and France, there was a renewed interest in the Empire and Directoire styles. Designers combined the clean, geometric lines of Art Deco with classical decorative motifs to create what became known as a “modern-classical” aesthetic.
