About the Item

This is a large antique Japanese Tansu, distinguished by its broad, elegant proportions and deeply aged black-brown surface. Its long horizontal form creates a quiet yet powerful presence, bringing a sense of calm and understated strength to an interior. The piece is believed to date from the Meiji period (circa 1868–1912). It is crafted from Japanese cedar (Sugi), a material traditionally used for many forms of Japanese furniture. Entirely free from decorative metal fittings, the Tansu is defined solely by the beauty of the wood and the simplicity of its construction. Stripped of anything unnecessary, its design embodies a distinctly Japanese sense of simplicity and the honest beauty of an object originally created for practical use. Particularly striking are the two large sliding doors across the front. Their horizontal lattice design, composed of slender wooden slats, creates a quiet architectural rhythm reminiscent of traditional Japanese interiors. The surface retains the deep coloration that only aged cedar can acquire over many decades. Beneath the nearly black-brown tones, areas of reddish brown and exposed natural wood subtly emerge where the surface has been worn through use. Each board has developed its own variations in tone and character. This is not an artificially distressed finish applied to new furniture, but a landscape created through generations of handling, use, and the gradual accumulation of time. Scratches, abrasions, and traces of old repairs have all become part of the history and character of the piece. At the lower left corner of the right sliding door is a hole that was made by a mouse many years ago. The area was subsequently repaired with an old, rusted iron plate. This small and honest repair is particularly beautiful against the irregularly aged wooden surface. Rather than diminishing the piece, it adds another layer to its history and reflects the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—an appreciation for imperfection, impermanence, and the visible passage of time. Both sliding doors still open and close remarkably smoothly. The interior is fitted with a shelf, allowing the Tansu to remain fully functional as a storage cabinet. Its low, elongated form also makes it particularly suitable as a display cabinet, with the top providing an ideal surface for ceramics, sculpture, art objects, or other treasured pieces. The entire piece has been carefully cleaned and disinfected, allowing it to be used with confidence. This is a remarkable example of antique Japanese furniture in which more than a century of time has itself become part of the design. It will be carefully packed and shipped safely from Japan.
