About the Item

Permanente Mobili Cantù Italian Sideboard with Glass Shelves, circa 1955 An exceptionally well-executed sideboard produced by Permanente Mobili Cantù, one of the most respected cabinetmaking firms associated with the postwar Italian furniture industry. Dating from the 1950s, the cabinet demonstrates the combination of refined craftsmanship, architectural structure, and sophisticated materials that established Cantù as a center of excellence in Italian furniture production. The sideboard is composed of four suspended case sections supported by tapering flat walnut uprights. Three compartments feature locking doors, while the fourth contains a bank of drawers fitted with distinctive raised hexagonal pulls. The cabinet tops are executed in beautifully figured Italian teak, each with a chamfered, diamond-cut profile that creates a subtle sculptural effect and provides a striking contrast to the more tightly grained teak used on the cabinet fronts and sides. Above each cabinet section rests a hexagonal glass shelf supported by brass fittings detailed with flat black lacquer. The interplay of warm teak, walnut, brass, black lacquer, and glass creates a highly sophisticated composition characteristic of the finest Italian furniture of the period. The interiors are finished in an aged off-white glazed birch and fitted with adjustable glass shelves, providing substantial and flexible storage. The base incorporates ten polished threaded bronze leveling discs housed within cast bronze hexagonal mounts, allowing precise adjustment on uneven flooring while adding another layer of exceptional engineering and craftsmanship. Bronze base elements are further accented with flat black lacquer. The cabinet retains its original embossed manufacturer's stamp, "Permanente Mobili Cantù," located on the upper edge of one of the cabinet doors. A rare and highly architectural example from one of Italy's premier mid-century cabinetmakers. Dimensions Height: 46.5 in. (118 cm) Width: 114 in. (290 cm) Depth: 18 in.
