Louis XVI Wardrobes and Armoires

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Rare 18th Century French Period Louis XVI Carved Walnut Armoire from Limoges

Rare 18th Century French Period Louis XVI Carved Walnut Armoire from Limoges

Located in Birmingham, AL

A rare and stately 18th century French Louis XVI period armoire, hand carved from walnut in the Limoges region of Limousin, known for its elegant Provincial interpretations of neoclassical furniture, circa 1760s. This monumental piece is a true testament to the architectural refinement and neoclassical symmetry that defines the Louis XVI period. Sculpted from dense, fine-grained walnut — a material reserved for only the wealthiest households — and richly aged to a luminous patina, this heirloom quality armoire is not only a functional storage piece but a lasting symbol of French sophistication and artisan mastery. The bold architectural façade is crowned with a deeply molded, stepped cornice above a reeded frieze, elements that speak to Enlightenment ideals of balance and form. The symmetrical double doors are framed by fluted pilasters and anchored by a central fluted stile, reinforcing the classical rhythm and stately verticality of the piece. Raised panels, inset fluted carvings, and finely molded corners add sculptural depth, while subtle shadow lines create a sense of movement and proportion. The carved apron, with vertical reeded detailing, mirrors the frieze above, bringing elegant cohesion to the overall design. Short, slightly tapered feet with fluted carvings rest beneath paneled corner blocks, grounding the armoire in both structure and grace. Inside, three generous fixed shelves offer substantial storage, as practical today as when it was created nearly 270 years ago. Original, hand forged iron barrel hinges with decorative collars run nearly the full height of the doors — a hallmark of 18th century craftsmanship. These substantial hinges, with finely turned central barrels and spiral detailing, not only supported the considerable weight of the walnut doors but also added a handsome vertical accent, reinforcing the neoclassical symmetry of the piece. Their presence, along with the impressive locking mechanism and original pierced iron escutcheons and keyplate, exemplifies the artisan's skill and the French tradition of treating even functional elements as art. The large antique iron key...

LOUIS XVI STYLE PARQUETRY-INLAID ORMOLU MOUNTED ONE-DOOR ARMOIRE Paris, France circa 1880 lock stamped "B & P Paris", back of one mount stamped "L.P." Item # 403BDA14P This exquisite Louis XVI style armoire is a picture of the high precision cabinetwork the French ébénistes of the 19th century were capable of producing. Crafted in Paris in the last years of the 19th century, the cabinet is finished on the top with an original marble top shaped to conform to the cabinet profile. This is raised by a thin crown of egg-and-dart molding over a repeating greek-key border executed in solid brass. The front door is a brilliant display of parquetry inlay work, an extraordinarily complicated arrangement that comes together flawlessly: the kingwood veneer ground is set diagonally while being bookmatched down the center to create symmetry - a form that is more fully developed in the sides of the case where these diagonal veneers are set into rectilinear and square panels for greater effect. This surrounds a rosewood and stringer-inlaid border encasing a latticework of rosewood astragals over squared lighter hue woods. The application of the veneers is so convincingly executed - note the curves of the rosewood inlays where the grain of the wood twists to create spirals that appear to layer upon one another. In the center of the door is a large ormolu mount of a Neoclassical urn with bacchus masks on either side raised over a pierced footer embellished by foliage. This door opens using only a key, as there is no knob or pull hardware to allow access to the space. The interior is a very spacious and simple arrangement that allows clothing to be hung while valuables and smalls are stored in the cupboard at the top. No keys are presently available for the door or the interior cupboard, but if locking the armoire is important than having keys fabricated is never terribly difficult and can be done by our shop upon request. The lock is marked on the inside by the fabricator "B & P Paris", while one fo the rosette mounts on the corners of the cabinet is marked "L.P." A magnificent example of Parisian craftsmanship from the late 19th century, this is a very fine armoire of ideal dimensions for both function and aesthetically. Unlike so many armoires and wardrobes...
