Medieval Furniture

MEDIEVAL STYLE

The Middle Ages in Europe followed the end of the Roman Empire, and in this time of change, which preceded the Renaissance, furniture was simple and utilitarian, with most homes having only the necessities like chests and benches. Much of medieval furniture, which was often made in oak or walnut, was built for the elite, particularly the emerging merchant class who owned multiple homes.

Life for many in the medieval era was unstable, and furniture was designed to be functional and portable. Peasants worked the fields for affluent landowners and didn’t have access to literature in the way that nobles and people of the church did (women less so than men). The furniture in their modest dwellings was typically limited to cookware and a handful of stools. Foldable chairs, while uncommon in homes of the early Middle Ages and emblematic of wealth, like all other furnishings of the time, allowed for easy transportation of a household. Trestle tables with detachable legs and collapsible beds were designed to be simply moved from place to place.

Medieval blanket chests were among the most important furniture objects and could further serve as tables or even beds. Some ancient traditions were carried forward to build this sturdy furniture, such as turnery. Although the furniture was minimally designed, embellishments like carvings added elegance to the heavy wood pieces. These details sometimes reflected trends in religious art like rose windows.

By the later Middle Ages, storage pieces like chests of drawers were often adorned with high relief carvings, such as geometric and floral motifs. By the 14th and 15th centuries, design had developed to include more involved pieces like cupboards and desks, while benches frequently doubled as chests with hinged seats. Beds also changed in this era from basic boards to four-post designs with large drapes to keep the sleeper warm. These beds and other medieval bedroom furniture were significant status symbols, passed down through families and used as places to conduct business and receive visitors.

Surviving examples of medieval furniture are very rare, yet its distinctive aesthetics influenced later styles like William and Mary and Arts and Crafts.

Rare Gothic Oak Panel Carved With Vine And Grape Cluster Motif, Circa 1320–1400

Rare Gothic Oak Panel Carved With Vine And Grape Cluster Motif, Circa 1320–1400

Located in Bilzen, BE

"Rare Gothic Oak Panel Carved With Vine And Grape Cluster Motif, Circa 1320–1400" Rare Gothic Carved Oak Panel with Vine & Grape Motif, c. 1320–1400 This exceptional carved oak panel is a fine example of pure Gothic design, originating from Northern Europe—most likely Flanders, northern France, or England—and dating to the early–mid 14th century. The panel is richly carved in openwork with an interlacing vine scroll bearing clustered grapes, a motif strongly associated with medieval Christian symbolism, representing the Eucharist and the “True Vine” of Christ. The design is entirely Gothic in conception, free of any later Renaissance influence, with flowing, organic tracery rather than strict symmetry. A rectangular mortise is present to one side, indicating that the piece originally formed part of a cabinet or small door—possibly from a church sacristy...

18th Century Spanish Leather and Brass Nailhead Domed Trunk with Original Key

18th Century Spanish Leather and Brass Nailhead Domed Trunk with Original Key

Located in Dallas, TX

This handsome Spanish trunk was crafted circa 1780 and features a domed wooden frame clad in hand-stitched leather, richly decorated with large and small brass nailheads in a rhythmic, geometric pattern. The ornamentation reflects the cuero claveteado tradition, an iconic technique of Spanish and Spanish Colonial craftsmanship. The hinged lid opens to reveal a divided wood interior, originally intended for storing valuables or personal effects. Original iron hardware, including strap hinges, lockplate, and key, remains intact (lock not working however). The exterior displays a deep, timeworn patina with softened edges and natural surface wear that speaks to over two centuries of use. Measuring 20.5″ wide × 10″ deep × 13.5″ high, this antique domed trunk makes a striking decorative accent, perfect for a console...

A large and exceptional 15th c. Gothic leather and iron bound travelling chest
A large and exceptional 15th c. Gothic leather and iron bound travelling chest

A large and exceptional 15th c. Gothic leather and iron bound travelling chest

Located in PARIS, FR

Large leather and iron bound travel chest, very rare in its dimensions Late 15th century, Northern France Dimensions: h.103 cm, w. 178 cm, d. 77cm ( (H. 40.55 in, w. 70.08 in. d. 30.31 in) Our rectangular-shaped chest opens with a rounded lid. It is entirely covered in leather veneered on a wooden core, and decorated with wrought and crafted iron frames and hinges. It is garnished on all sides with iron hinges cut at the ends of Gothic trefoils. On the facade two lock plates with cut-out cloverleaf borders fitted with a hasp (one missing) attached to the cover. The iron bands serving as reinforcements on all sides as well as the central bands are decorated with plant and floral friezes and geometric patterns. These strips are attached to the wood using daisy-headed nails, typical of the French Renaissance. Given its size and loaded weight, our trunk has four carrying handles: two wrought iron side handles, but also two front handles. The interior has a stretched fabric dating from at least the 17th century, we find on the interior sides of the cover the original raspberry-colored vellum. This is a rare model in leather and iron of very large dimensions. Expensive materials, which were only used on small Gothic boxes (20 cm to 50 cm in length) like those in the public collections of many museums. Large chests exceeding 1 meter in length for the sake of economy and simplicity were generally made of wood sometimes covered with iron cladding. We found a large chest in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, but still smaller than ours (inv. 47.144, dim. H: 22 1/2" W: 50 1/2" D: 21"). There are also two similar large chests (with flat or slightly domed lids) in the collections of the Barcelona Leather...

A very impressive Westphalian Gothic chest or ‚Stollentruhe’, Westphalia, Germany, circa 1500-1550. Wrought iron mounted oak, partially carved. The monumental rectangular standing chest with full-height stiles, extensively mounted with wrought ironwork straps terminating in quatrefoil finials which ’wrap’ around the chest edges. These are fixed with convex head nails. The ironwork with some remains of an originally red painted surface. In addition, running along the edges of the lid at the front and sides is a plain iron band, close-nailed. The feet of the two front legs are finely carved on the front face, in low relief with a rectangular arched ’panel’ depicting on the left a lion, on the right a dragon holding each a coat of arms. Regarding the age of circa 500 years, this coffer is in exceptionally good condition, with only smaller restorations.  Comparative literature • Baumeier, Stefan, Beschlagene Kisten; Die ältesten Truhen Westfalens, Essen, 2012. • Falke, Otto von, Deutsche Möbel...
