About the Item

"Maupiti" is a coffee table, designed by Nestor Perkal and manufactured by Oscar Maschera, featuring a steel base epoxy powder coated and bronze colored and a tabletop made of honeycomb wood covered by vegetable tanned leather. It's part of the "Isole" collection. Colors combination to be chosen from the available range. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: Ø 43.3", H. 14.9" "The first time I saw it I thought it was something from another planet. It didn’t have anything in common with our common landscape. It was an original, brand new thing. The atmosphere of the house changed, the appearance of what surrounded us changed. And so did our socialization: we spent more time sitting in a circle, carrying on long conversations. None of us could conceive that an object could have so much power. On account of its shape, mostly. What we were looking at was a round table made of leather. If you looked intently, it was as if it whirled. It was hypnotic – as if someone had placed a magnet on that table and we were drawn to it. We sat around it, laid our arms down and the leather morphed and we did too. We would test it with our hands far and wide. We would slide our fingers along the small creases that separated the leather segments. It was like playing with marbles on the sand. At the same time, we could smell the earth of the countryside and the scents carried by the wind. Each of us would do whatever he or she had to or wanted to do, pursuing this and that thought, until at one point we were all there, around the table. We had been waiting for one another. We felt as if we were on the beach of a desert island where everyone has agreed to meet just before dusk. Now it’s as if I can see each and every one of us sitting in a circle like you do around a bonfire." Marco Triches NESTOR PERKAL, born in Buenos Aires, lives and works in Paris. Though he trained as an architect, his work has always been oriented to design and interior architecture. In 1985, he founded an international design gallery in Paris, l’Espace Nestor Perkal, where he was among the first in Europe to show and sell pieces from the “New International Design” movement: Memphis Milano, Mariscal and many others. From 1987-1994, he was the artistic director of the goldsmith’s company Algorithme, where he invited many designers to work on edition projects that were highly successful in France and abroad. As a designer, he has collaborated with Drimmer, Lou Fagotin, Artcodif, Veronese, etc. At CIRVA (International Research Centre on Glass and Plastic Arts), he created the Miroirs collection in 1994-1996. As an interior architect, he has furnished the “café” of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, different areas for Cartier and the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, as well as many private apartments and houses. He has been the curator and scenographer of exhibitions held at the Cartier Foundation (La vie en Roses, 1998), at the Galerie Chez Valentin, Paris (“chez Valentin 2000”), at the Passage de Retz (Paris, 2000), at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rochechouart and at the Grand Hornu in Belgium for the exhibition Désirs d’Objets (2003-2004) and at the Museum des Arts Décoratifs, Paris for the exhibition Editer le design (2006) and 100% Finlandia (2008). He has been the director of the Research Centre on the Arts of Fire and Earth (CRAFT) of Limoges (1993 – 2009), developing strong and lively projects aimed at creating an experimental and artistic connection between industrialists and designers, architects and artists.
