About the Item

Striking mixed-media coffee table by Dutch artist Paul Kingma, executed in the 1970s. This piece exemplifies Kingma’s signature approach, where furniture becomes a sculptural composition. The circular top is constructed as a carefully orchestrated assemblage of slate, stone, ceramic, and metal inlays, arranged in a geometric yet organic composition. Subtle tonal variations—deep blacks, earthy greys, oxidized reds, and textured mineral surfaces— create a rich visual rhythm. Embedded brass elements and industrial fragments introduce a refined contrast, reinforcing the dialogue between raw materiality and precise composition that defines Kingma’s work. The table rests on a cylindrical black base, providing a strong architectural foundation that enhances the presence of the top as an autonomous artwork. The base is not mechanically fixed to the top, allowing for ease of handling and positioning. Minor surface imperfections are present on the base; however, as it sits beneath the top, these are not visible in normal use. Both functional and sculptural, this piece operates as a centerpiece within an interior—bridging art, design, and architecture. A highly collectible work, representative of the Dutch modernist movement and increasingly sought after by international collectors and designers.
