About the Item

This is a magnificent late 19th-century Japanese Meiji Period altar table features a classic rectangular profile highlighted by a stunning, vibrant red lacquered top surface with elegant gold detailing. Below the top, the primary frieze is a masterwork of high-relief pierced carving, depicting a sacred phoenix surrounded by blooming peonies and foliage. The piece is intricately embellished with water-gilt finishes, contrasting beautifully against the historic red tones. Flanked by hand-painted floral panels, the upper case drops to an architectural apron resembling rolling heavenly clouds. The entire frame rests on elegant fluted cabriole legs terminating in reverse-scrolled acanthus feet, braced securely by a low rectangular stretcher containing an additional carved panel. Late 19th Century (Meiji Period)Origin, Japan. Lacquered wood, vermilion/red lacquer, water-gilt finish, carved gesso and highly detailed brass mounts. Very good antique condition, consistent with age and use, some fading to lacquer , no missing pieces, solid structure.
