About the Item

Large Louis XV console in lacquered wood with mecca gilding, faux-marble painted top and rich spacer. Mecca gilding is an Italian gilding technique: a silver leaf is applied to the wood, followed by gilding, the recipe for which was carefully guarded by the workshops, for a finish with the look and preciousness of gold leaf. Once known as the "gilding of the poor", mecca-gilded furniture is now highly sought-after: the oxidation of the silver adds an elegant, refined nuance.
