About the Item

Elegant Napoleon III sewing table dating from the 19th century, crafted from ebonized wood and lacquered papier-mâché. The shaped top is decorated with a finely detailed polychrome floral composition, combining delicate hand-painted decoration with iridescent mother-of-pearl inlays. The central bouquet is framed by intricate mother-of-pearl borders, gilt lines and scrolling motifs characteristic of the refined decorative style of the French Second Empire. The apron, drawer and pierced lyre-shaped base are further embellished with delicate gilt-painted foliage, palmettes and ornamental scrollwork. The hinged lid opens to reveal a fitted and compartmentalized interior lined in dusty rose velvet, originally intended for storing sewing accessories. A mirror is incorporated into the underside of the lid, while a pull-out drawer provides additional storage. Both functional and highly decorative, this sewing table is a fine example of the elegant craftsmanship produced during the Napoleon III period. It could now be used as a small occasional table, jewelry cabinet or statement piece in a traditional or eclectic interior. Condition: This antique piece displays a natural patina and minor signs of wear consistent with its age and use, adding to its authenticity and character.
