About the Item

A superb French Art Deco dining suite by Batistin Spade (1891–1969), comprising an extendable dining table and a full set of twelve matching chairs, executed in warm, light-toned oak. The table top is laid in a bold diamond/checkerboard parquetry, alternating book-matched panels of oak veneer cut on the diagonal against the straight-grained border — a favorite device of Spade's later, more restrained Art Deco output, giving the top a subtle geometric play of light without recourse to color or inlay. The table is raised on gently tapered square legs and fitted with additional leaves, allowing it to extend to comfortably seat twelve, as shown. The accompanying set of twelve dining chairs is designed en suite, each with a distinctive pierced X-form (croisillon) splat back in solid oak above a generously proportioned drop-in seat, upholstered in a pale celadon-green fabric with a subtle wave/moiré texture. The set includes both side chairs and a pair of armchairs, all sharing the same tapered leg and quietly architectural silhouette characteristic of Spade's dining room suites of the period. Batistin Spade was among the most prolific and commercially successful decorator-furniture makers of twentieth-century France, and full, matched dining sets of this scale and completeness — a table with its full run of original chairs — are increasingly rare to find intact today. This suite would suit a substantial dining room and pairs naturally with other Continental Art Deco case pieces. Batistin Spade was one of the most prolific and commercially celebrated decorator-furniture makers of twentieth-century France. Born in Marseille in 1891 to a family of upholsterers and tapestry makers, he trained briefly in his father's shop before studying drawing and sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1908 he moved to Paris, and by 1910, with his brother's support, opened his own workshop in the Latin Quarter to execute his furniture designs. Spade's aesthetic drew heavily on eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French furniture, which he reinterpreted with a personal, contemporary sensibility and the most modern production techniques available to him — an approach that made his work equally at home in traditional and Art Deco interiors. He built an enormous private clientele across Europe and the Americas, and received major public and institutional commissions, including furniture programs for the French Mobilier National (supplying the Ministries of Labor and Finance, the Merchant Navy, the PTT, and French embassies in Ottawa and Warsaw) as well as interior fittings for some thirty ocean liners, among them the Île de France, the Liberté, the Flandre, and the legendary Normandie. A working craftsman rather than a self-promoter, Spade rarely exhibited at the Salons and gave no interviews during his lifetime, which has left his prolific output somewhat less documented in period literature than that of some contemporaries — even as it remains highly regarded by collectors today. He retired in 1958, passing the business to his sons, Pierre and Georges, and died in Paris in 1969.
