About the Item

Large George III Mahogany Tilt-Top Dining or Breakfast Table, c.1780–1800 A large and well-proportioned George III period mahogany tilt-top dining or breakfast table, dating to the late 18th century, circa 1780–1800. The oblong top is formed from well-figured solid mahogany boards and finished with a finely worked thumb-moulded edge, displaying a pleasing colour and mature patina developed over more than two centuries. The top is fitted with a traditional Georgian tilt mechanism with brass locking catch, allowing the table to be stored upright when not in use. The table stands on a ring-turned pedestal above a well-drawn base of four reeded and gently swept legs, each terminating in original brass lion’s paw caps and castors. A handsome and practical Georgian table of confident proportions, typical of good quality late 18th century English cabinetmaking. The generous size comfortably accommodates six people and works equally well as a dining or breakfast table. Dimensions: Height: 72 cm (28 1/2") Width: 144 cm (56 3/4") Depth: 101 cm (39 3/4") Condition: Very good antique condition, commensurate with age. Structurally sound and sturdy with no loose joints. The table retains its original hardware including brass locking catch and lion’s paw castors. Minor surface marks and wear consistent with age and use. Carefully cleaned and wax polished in our workshop and well presented for use.
