17th Century French Money Changer Table

About the Item

This intriguing table was used to discreetly exchange currencies between the worlds first bankers and their clients. This type of table is first seen in the 1500's, and they were usually either equipped with sliding and locking drawers, or a sliding and locking top. This way transactions can remain discreet to the public, and the sliding drawers or top made for an extra element of security for the banker to protect himself from seated clientele. The tables are quite rare today. The example that we have here, has a top that has been replaced in the late 1800's while the base is at least 17th century with a few elements possibly replaced. Today, this intriguing antique French twist top money changers table can be used as game table, side table, or even a serving table. When closed, this wonderful table could be used as a writing table with the proper stool. When the top is fully opened, it measures 44 1/2 inches. The 17th century lock would have activated a vertical plate that keeps the top and it's contects secure. The top turns, locks into place and opens onto two large rectangular panels suitable for game playing. On the front apron is an image of an angel in flight holding an end of a drape that is flowing behind a shield. The shield has an image of a key as well as a real keyhole at the center of the apron. To the right of the shield, is a dove flying downwards emanating rays or beams of light into a small frame of a house with a book on the roof. To the right of this is a nun in a nun’s habit, sitting in a chair. Behind her is a cabinet with two decorated doors. The back apron has another shield with what appears to be partial initials on its front. The rest of the carved motifs depict both Renaissance and Gothic motifs. There are primitive linen fold motifs to either side, and the blocks on either side of the apron feature mascarons. Under the front panel are Gothic quatrefoils. Beneath the back apron are three indented and decorated panels depicting a bird with outstretched wings at the center, and flanking this are arched columns over fluting. The entire piece rests upon platform legs with four feet depicting mascarons. Closed Dimensions: H=29 1/8, W=43 5/8, D=22, Open Dimensions: H=28, 43 3/4 x 44 1/2

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. Rubs, nicks, scratches and fading to wood in areas all commensurate with age. Top is newer, most likely late 1800s, and some pieces of the base may have been replaced.

A beautifully crafted wooden table from Spain, the walnut was hand-carved at the end of the Renaissance (in the 1600’s). As is the case with most Spanish Renaissance tables, the 1 ½” thick single plank top rests upon tightly turned legs. The edges of the top do not have molding or carvings but receive added character from the large dovetail grooves that were used to construct the table. This table has framing beneath the top plank which houses three horizontally aligned drawers. Each drawer façade has an iron escutcheon in the shape of shield with two engrailed top edges. The keyplate is set within a foliate margent that is surrounded by several layers of molding. Identical carvings and iron plates can be seen on the opposite side of the table, which has faux drawer fronts. Beneath the belt are four turned legs connected by an H-stretcher.
