About the Item

An exceptionally decorative 19th-century Eastern Khatam work table and compartmented box, finely hand-crafted with elaborate geometric inlay throughout. The hexagonal top is divided into six individual triangular hinged lids, each finely decorated with intricate repeating geometric and floral motifs characteristic of Eastern Khatam work. When closed, the individual panels combine to form a particularly striking symmetrical star-like design. Each section lifts independently to reveal a vibrant red-lined fitted interior, divided into separate compartments originally intended for the storage of small personal or work items. The compartments make the piece particularly suitable for storing sewing implements, playing cards, bridge accessories, cribbage pieces, dominoes, counters and other small games or collectibles. The richly decorated top is supported on an elegant pierced and turned wooden base, with slender turned legs joined by an elaborate geometric arrangement of carved and fretwork stretchers. The construction is highly decorative from every angle and beautifully complements the complexity of the inlaid top. Khatam is a traditional Eastern decorative technique celebrated for its extremely detailed geometric patterns and meticulous hand craftsmanship. The extensive decoration of this table gives the piece considerable visual impact while retaining its original practical purpose as a fitted work and storage table. When closed, it functions beautifully as an occasional table, side table, lamp table or bedside table, while the concealed compartmented interior adds an unusual and highly practical element. (please note the table segments are slightly raised) A particularly attractive example of 19th-century Eastern decorative craftsmanship, combining fine inlay, ingenious storage and sculptural architectural form.
