About the Item

A particularly attractive and unusual 19th-century English pollard oak work table of excellent colour and quality, retaining a rare retailer’s label for Boothroyd Sons & Rimmer, Storers, Southport to the underside. Crafted from beautifully figured pollard oak, the table displays the rich swirling grain and warm honeyed tones for which this highly decorative timber is prized. The top is fitted with a useful frieze drawer and stands upon elegant turned and carved end supports terminating in finely carved cabriole legs with scrolling feet, displaying the quality craftsmanship associated with good Victorian cabinet making. One of the most charming surviving features is the presence of the original engraved mother-of-pearl spools, a delightful detail that reflects the table's original purpose as a work or sewing table and adds both authenticity and character. Compact and versatile, this piece would work equally well as a sewing table, writing table, lamp table, or decorative side table. Its elegant proportions and striking timber make it suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. The retailer's label for Boothroyd Sons & Rimmer of Southport provides an interesting historical connection and adds to the provenance of the piece. About Pollard Oak Pollard oak results from the traditional practice of pollarding, where upper branches are regularly cut back to encourage new growth. This process creates timber with exceptional figure and texture, producing some of the most decorative grain patterns found in English furniture. During the 19th century, it was highly sought after by cabinet makers for fine-quality furniture. Condition Presented in good antique condition with a wonderful aged patina consistent with its age and use. The timber has matured beautifully over time, giving the table exceptional depth and character.
