About the Item

A distinctive antique mahogany occasional table of kidney form, this two-tier piece combines confident turned work with specific decorative details that set it apart from standard production. The upper kidney-shaped tier carries an applied bead boss border running its full perimeter — evenly spaced turned bosses set into a molded surround — with a small carved circular platform at the notch bearing an entwined monogram in a dot-punched surround, indicating the table was produced to a specific commission. The four legs present a compound turning profile: bold baluster capitals with stacked ring collars above a tightly wound spool or bobbin-turned shaft, with gadroon-carved collars at the junction with each tier. The legs terminate in cast brass curved sabre feet. The lower tier is oval with a matching molded edge. The primary material is mahogany throughout. The bead boss border to the upper tier, the gadroon leg collars, the compound turning profile, and the cast brass sabre feet together constitute a specific and individual decorative program. The personal monogram — an entwined cipher of two initials in a recessed carved medallion — points to a commissioned origin, though the identity of the original owner has not been established. No maker’s mark or label has been identified. A piece of genuine decorative individuality suited to a serious collection or a distinguished interior.
