About the Item

A distinctive Dutch side table from the 1920s, executed in solid oak and decorated with a striking cross-shaped inlay in Macassar ebony on the tabletop. The graphic ebony lines divide the circular top into four sections, creating a subtle yet elegant ornament typical of Dutch decorative design of the period. The table stands on a sculptural base composed of four organically curved supports that flow downward into a cylindrical pedestal. This architectural yet fluid construction is highly characteristic of the Amsterdam School and Dutch Arts & Crafts tradition, where expressive forms and strong craftsmanship play a central role. The warm tone and pronounced grain of the oak contrast beautifully with the deep, striped pattern of the Macassar ebony, giving the piece both visual richness and material depth. The cylindrical base is a particularly uncommon feature and adds to the sculptural quality of the design. With its modest proportions, the table works perfectly as a side table or small coffee table. Constructionally very solid and stable. The tabletop shows light signs of age and use consistent with its age. About the style called 'Amsterdamse School' ''Amsterdamse School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style from the period 1910-1930 by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer en J.M. van der Meij. The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognisable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre. Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
