About the Item

A finely crafted English Victorian dressing table in richly figured mahogany, dating from the 19th century, notable for its restrained scale and exceptional attention to detail. Raised on its original castors, the piece functions beautifully as a dressing table, writing table or freestanding centre-room console. The sides are defined by paired barley twist columns joined by a matching stretcher, creating a refined Gothic Revival silhouette and boasting architectural profile. The original black Marquina marble top is subtly recessed within a raised moulded edge, offering both practicality and an elegant contrast against the warmth of the mahogany. The central drawer retains its original working key and opens to reveal three fitted interior compartments. Above are three additional drawers providing practical concealed storage. The upper mirror is fully adjustable and retains its original mercury glass plate, framed by a deeply carved octagonal frame. The reverse is finished in solid mahogany, allowing the piece to stand beautifully away from the wall. What makes this piece especially appealing is the balance between its modest footprint and the remarkable sophistication of its craftsmanship. A highly refined and unusual late 1800s piece of furniture combining functionality with sculptural presence.
