About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967) was a Swiss architect and designer who played a key role in the creation of Chandigarh, India’s pioneering modernist city. As a cousin and close collaborator of Le Corbusier, Jeanneret moved to India in the 1950s to oversee the implementation of the city’s master plan and design many of its civic buildings, residences, and interior furnishings. While Le Corbusier focused on large-scale architectural forms, Jeanneret emphasized furniture design that combined functionality, simplicity, and the use of locally sourced materials such as teak and cane. The Vanity is one of Jeanneret’s elegant furniture creations, designed for residential bedrooms and dressing areas. Typically crafted from solid teak, it features clean lines, a rectangular tabletop, drawers for storage, and often a mirror mounted above. Its low, balanced proportions and precise joinery reflect Jeanneret’s modernist aesthetic while ensuring practical usability. The design is minimalistic yet visually appealing, complementing interiors without overpowering them. Today, Jeanneret’s Vanity pieces are highly sought after for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and timeless modernist elegance, making them prized collector’s items worldwide.
