About the Item

This artwork by André Verroken is exclusively designed for Peter Goossens, the previous owner of the esteemed three-star restaurant Hof van Cleve. Their first encounter occurred in the early 90s when Verroken visited Hof van Cleve alongside cabinetmaker Emiel Veranneman. Notably, Verroken's gallery lies a mere 10 kilometers from the restaurant. The art piece reflects Verroken's distinctive focus on composition, color, choice of material, and materiality. With a strict geometric design, squares, rectangles and triangles weave together in harmonious interplay. Just beneath its serene surface lies a tantalizing sense of mystery, as Verroken expertly incorporates the trompe l'oeil technique to play with viewers' perceptions. This captivating blue artwork pays homage to the pursuit of perfection exemplified by Hof van Cleve. André Verroken, a Belgian artist born in 1939, stands as a stalwart in the world of furniture design. With a career spanning over five decades, Verroken's contributions have been nothing short of revolutionary. Beginning in 1968, he established himself as a leading figure in Flanders' burgeoning furniture scene, influenced by geometric precision and architectural principles. Throughout his career, Verroken remained steadfast in his commitment to artistic principles, continually pushing the boundaries of form and function. From his early collaborations with renowned designers such as Martin Visser to his groundbreaking modular creations, Verroken's work reflects a deep-seated passion for balanced, pure, and clear aesthetics. Verroken's impact extends far beyond the realm of furniture design. His drawings, characterized by their constructivist and monumental nature, offer insight into his artistic process and creative vision. Recognized for his contributions, Verroken received accolades such as the Henry Van de Velde Prize for Best Product in 1994, cementing his status as a trailblazer in the world of design.

Belgian art and design, Michel Martens Postmodern Glass Sculpture

Belgian art and design, Michel Martens Postmodern Glass Sculpture

By Michel Martens

Located in Antwerp, BE

Belgium; 1970's; Glass sculpture; Postmodern art; Michel Martens, a large glass sculpture with several punctuation marks, colored, frosted, and sandblasted glass. Signed by the artist on the bottom right corner. Belgium artist Michel Martens is famous for his impressive glass art. He created this postmodern piece of art in the 1970s. Martens (1921-2006) was a respected designer of stained glass windows and had an impressive career creating stained glass windows for churches. His credo was 'light is my material, glass my medium'. Martens was an autodidact and first taught himself the technique of stained windows. He designed an impressive 7000 meters stained glass between 1947 and 1989 for churches and monasteries. From 1968 onwards, Martens started to lose the church as a main client and therefore started to develop a practice in which he worked with mirrors that were also suitable for the private sector and private homes. With his radical and modern approach to glass art, Martens became part of the Post-war Abstract Modernist movement. Using mirrored glass opened up new perspectives for Martens. He even started using industrial glass as well, for his so-called 'Crazy Mirrors...

Abstract vilten art van André Bogaert

Abstract vilten art van André Bogaert

Located in Zwevegem, VWV

Bogaert's felt assemblages have a particularly soft and accessible appearance, which no other material he uses can match. At first glance they appear to be wooden objects, but the woolly surface makes it clear that they are felt. To date, only a few works of this format have been released. Bogaert's felt assemblies offer a special insight into the possibilities of this material. While felt is often seen as something functional and mundane, Bogaert managed to elevate it into a medium for artistic expression. The softness and accessibility of the felt contrast with the solid and sometimes robust shapes he created, creating an intriguing tension that invites the viewer to think more deeply about material and form. In summary, André Bogaert...
