About the Item

Carlos Ramos, “Vo. III” — Contemporary Portuguese Sculpture in Wood, Marble & Iron Origin: Portugal Artist: Carlos Ramos Date: 2025 Materials: Carved wood, iron, and marble Signature: Signed and dated “Carlos Ramos 25” on the base Description A powerful and poetic contemporary sculpture by Portuguese artist Carlos Ramos, known for his tactile engagement with materials and his reverence for the form of language. Titled “Vo. III”, this work is crafted in Ramos’s signature combination of wood and iron, with the exceptional and rare addition of carved marble—used here for the upper segmented form. Ramos’s works are deeply informed by his love of letters and words—not as vehicles of semantic content, but as visual elements to be admired for their shape and rhythm. In Vo. III, scattered texts wrap and etch across surfaces like veils of meaning, never fully legible, never meant to be read—only to be seen. The text becomes a graphic pattern, inviting visual engagement and contemplative pause. The sculpture is composed of a vertical wooden base with burned or inked calligraphy and figural imagery, mounted on a minimalist iron plinth. Crowning the piece is a tripartite marble form, incised with further lines of text that play with light and shadow. The work evokes the idea of a totem, a codex, or a contemporary relic—anchored by its material honesty and enriched by its layered meanings. Condition Excellent condition with natural variations in material and finish inherent to the artist’s process. Signed and dated by the artist. Notes An evocative and conceptually rich work by a sculptor whose practice explores the visual and tactile beauty of language. Ramos’s work is increasingly sought after by collectors of contemporary Portuguese and European art. This piece is a set of 3 others. The Vol. II is also available in the website.
