About the Item

A charming early 19th-century portrait miniature depicting a young woman dressed in the elegant fashion of the late Regency period, circa 1810–1830. The sitter wears a low-cut white gown with a delicate pearl necklace and a warm orange-brown shawl draped around her shoulders. Her softly curled, ringleted hairstyle is characteristic of the period, giving the portrait an unmistakable Regency character. She appears to be holding a small book or case, adding a particularly intimate quality to the composition. The image appears to be a fine hand-coloured stipple engraving or miniature portrait on paper, presented beneath glass. The subtle dot-work visible across the image is characteristic of the stipple engraving technique, suggesting that this may be a finely produced printed portrait that has been delicately hand-tinted rather than an original oil painting. It is housed in a deep, moulded and gilded wooden period frame, with gentle age-related wear that adds to its antique character. The paper shows some minor foxing and age-related spotting, particularly around the neckline and lower portion of the portrait, consistent with its age and medium.
