Bring the rich artistry of Indonesian textile heritage into your space with this antique copper batik printing block from Lombok, now transformed into a sculptural artwork mounted on Japanese Shou Sugi Ban-finished wood. Hand-crafted from copper mounted on a metal frame, it features deeply detailed floral, foliate, bird, or mythological motifs. Known locally as cap (pronounced ‘chop’), these copper blocks were heated and dipped into hot wax before being pressed onto cloth to create resist patterns, allowing artisans to build up layered batik designs of great intricacy and meaning – each motif reflecting local symbols, natural forms, and cultural storytelling. Each block is mounted onto a bespoke plinth of Japanese cedar finished with the traditional Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板) technique, also known as Yakisugi. This process involves charring, brushing, and polishing the wood to create a deep blackened finish with enhanced grain, durability, and a striking wabi-sabi aesthetic that complements the aged copper beautifully. When creatively lit, the intricate openwork casts captivating shadows onto walls, adding dimensionality and visual poetry to any interior.
