About the Item

English Georgian Neoclassical Hand-Chased Brass Cornucopia Wall Pocket, Late 18th C/Early 19th C This elegant antique English cornucopia wall pocket is a refined example of Neoclassical decorative metalwork, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, during the Georgian era. Measuring 20.5 inches high by 6.5 inches wide and 3 inches deep, the piece is executed in hand-chased brass and designed in the form of the classical horn of plenty, an enduring symbol of abundance, hospitality, and domestic prosperity. The elongated, tapering form is richly decorated with finely chased ornament, including scrolling acanthus leaves, classical volutes, and textured punchwork grounds that create depth and subtle light play across the surface. These motifs derive directly from Greco-Roman architectural vocabulary, reflecting the Neoclassical movement’s reverence for antiquity, balance, and idealized natural forms. The ornament appears to grow organically along the horn, reinforcing the symbolic association with nourishment and plenty. The lower terminal is sculpted with a stylized zoomorphic head, likely referencing a ram or goat, animals traditionally associated with strength, sacrifice, and prosperity in classical mythology. At the top, an integrated hanging handle with decorative cresting allows the pocket to be securely mounted while maintaining a graceful silhouette on the wall. Cornucopia wall pockets of this type were traditionally hung near fireplaces, doorways, or pier glasses and used to hold fireplace matches, kindling, letters, gloves, or flowers. Their placement near the hearth carried both practical and symbolic meaning, aligning warmth and welcome with the classical ideals of abundance and good fortune.
