The Rörstrand Faience Horse Plaque Swedish, Circa 1840 This charming and unusual plaque is a fine example of mid-19th-century Scandinavian faience, an earthenware typically associated with the prestigious Rörstrand factory in Sweden. Faience—a technique involving painting on a tin-glazed, opaque white surface—was popular across Europe, but this piece exhibits a particularly endearing folk sensibility typical of Northern European design. The plaque is skillfully moulded in three dimensions to depict a spirited galloping gray horse with a flowing black mane and tail. This three-dimensional, relief-moulded quality distinguishes it from typical flat wall tiles. The simple, naive folk art approach is highly engaging; the horse is amusingly decorated with a stippled coat and stands above brightly painted green tufts of grass and flowers, giving the impression of a treasured domestic object. The Parrot's Garden: Dutch Delft Polychrome Chinoiserie Plaque, Circa 1730–40 A rare and vibrant Dutch Delft polychrome wall plaque, dating to the early 18th century (circa 1730–40). The shaped plaque features a raised, molded border decorated with alternating painted panels of flowers and Chinese auspicious objects (such as scrolls and ribbons). The central scene is painted in a distinctive puce, yellow, and green palette, depicting a slightly off-center table holding a vase filled with flowers. Perched prominently on the floral branches is a large yellow parrot, surrounded by several flying insects. To the left, a small figure of a gardener stands with two watering pots at his feet, tending to the scene. The composition is surmounted by a molded blue shell finial pierced with a suspension hole, and the exterior rim is finished in blue.
