View of Paris from Pont-Royal to Pont-Neuf, Engraving by Pierre-Gabriel Berthault, 1786 This elegant late 18th-century engraving by Pierre-Gabriel Berthault (1748–1819) offers a sweeping and atmospheric vista along the Seine, captured from Pont-Royal and looking toward the iconic Pont-Neuf in Paris. Berthault’s refined linework brings the bustling river traffic, grand quays, and luminous Parisian sky to life, illustrating the city just years before the Revolution with remarkable clarity and poetic restraint. The sheet bears creases and minor imperfections, all of which contribute to a beautifully aged surface and a sense of historical authenticity. Presented in an older English frame of slender oak, the piece has a warm, understated presence that complements the engraving’s subtle tonality.
