About the Item

This rare pair of finely executed red chalk drawings was created in 1786 by Ludwig Weiß, a notable academic artist associated with the Munich Academy. Both sheets are signed and dated, providing valuable insight into Weiß’s early artistic training and his engagement with classical models. The compositions depict mythological and allegorical figures in dynamic arrangements, drawing inspiration from the frescoes of the Galleria Farnese in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, which were famously decorated by the Carracci brothers. These celebrated cycles were central reference points for European academic education in the late 18th century and served as essential study material for aspiring artists. Executed in warm red chalk, the drawings demonstrate Weiß’s mastery of anatomy, proportion, and spatial composition. The confident contour lines, dense hatching, and subtle tonal transitions reveal a sculptural approach to form, foreshadowing his later career as a sculptor and drawing instructor. Ludwig Weiß (1768–1843) studied at the Munich Academy and worked as a sculptor and teacher. His works include major ecclesiastical commissions, such as the sarcophagus of Saint Castulus in Kempten, extensive nativity scenes with hundreds of figures, and an alabaster bust of King Maximilian I, as well as landscape compositions and battle scenes formerly held in the royal treasury in Munich. These two drawings were likely created as part of Weiß’s academic exercises, translating monumental fresco compositions into intimate works on paper. As such, they provide rare insight into late 18 th century German academic practice and the transmission of Italian High Renaissance and Baroque models north of the Alps. Together, they form an important and visually compelling ensemble, ideal for collectors of Old Master and early academic drawings, works related to the reception of the Italian Renaissance, and Munich School artists.
