About the Item

Andre Derain was born in Chatou France in 1880. He met Matisse early in his life but was conscripted into the French army in 1901. After his service and when released Matisse convinced his parents to allow him to stop training as an engineering student to develop his artistic talents. He devoted himself full time to painting and attended the Academie Julian. He developed his early important style with close friends Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. This became known as Fauvism and helped to usher in the other modern movements in art throughout the 20th century. The notable art dealer Ambroise Vollard sent Derain to London to work on a series of city-themed paintings that cemented his career as an important world-class artist. In 1907 his entire studios content was purchased by the famous dealer David-Henry Kahnweiler allowing Derain economic freedom. At that point, he moved to Montmarte to work in close association with his friend Pablo Picasso. At this time his work was less color oriented and became more influenced by cubism and Paul Cézanne's geometric undercurrent. In 1914 Derain was mobilized for military service again and was unable to do little work until 1919 upon his release from service. However, during the war years, he did manage to do a set of illustrations for Andre' Breton's first book " Mont de Piete". Breton was later to become the leader of the surrealist movement. After the war, Derain's style became focused on a more neoclassical modernism which could be found throughout Europe and in many other artist styles of the time. During this period he also became very interested in many book illustrations and in printmaking as well as a number of very successful set designs for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The later 1920s truly marked the height of Derain's career. He was awarded the Carnegie Prize in 1928 and held one-man shows extensively abroad notably shows in London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and New York. During the Second World War Derain was intensely courted by Nazi leaders because of his success in Germany as an artist and because of his prestige with the French as a spokesman for French culture and style. He was in Germany with other important French artists to attend the famous Nazi sanctioned exhibit of official art. He was extensively used by the party as a propaganda tool and after the war, he was branded a collaborator which forced many of his friends and colleges to ostracize him for a number of years. He continued to work in oils, gauche, etchings, book illustrations, and sculpture after the war years with success though his health was failing. The year 1953 took a great toll on Derain, He contracted a serious eye infection from which he never fully recovered and then he was struck by a vehicle in Gardes, Hauts de seine, Ile de France and died in 1954. The work represented here is from a large series he engraved in 1934 entitled "Le Satyricon" The work was published by Vollard in 1951 in an edition of 550.
