About the Item

A modern watercolor painting on paper by Cranbrook artist Glen Michaels. Circa 2000s. Reminiscent of the Bricktown People Mover Station in Detroit. Glen was commissioned to create an installation for the station; he completed 20ft x 30ft screen-screened enamel panels titled “Beaubien Passage.” Although 2-dimensional, the geometric shapes give the illusion of 3-dimensionality. Much like his sculptures, the composition creates an energetic vibration and is the hallmark of Glen Michael’s unique style. The lines and shapes give an impression of constant movement as they weave through intertwining forms – a nod to Italian Futurism. Variations of Glen’s sculptural artwork can be found in public installations throughout Metro Detroit. A unique opportunity to collect a rare artwork by a celebrated Cranbrook artist. Provenance: From the personal collection of Glen Michaels. Measures 12 inches tall and 9 inches wide. (unframed). In excellent condition. Glen Michaels (1927-2020) is a sculptor and painter, and his studio was in Birmingham, Michigan, where he lived and worked most of his life. His work installations include the Bricktown Station (Detroit People Mover) Bricktown Station, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the IMF in Washington, D.C. and the Ford Motor Company 1964 New York World's Fair exhibit (now installed in the Henry Ford Centennial Library). Mr. Michaels was honored and exhibited at the Scarab Club in Detroit, at the time of his 90th birthday. In 2017, Mr. Michaels was asked by the Downtown News Magazine to name his favorite sculpture. He replied, "Whatever is the most recent is always my favorite."

Robert Kelly Kalasa V Signed Modern Abstract Aquatint Etching 5/50 Framed, 1985

Robert Kelly Kalasa V Signed Modern Abstract Aquatint Etching 5/50 Framed, 1985

By Robert Kelly

Located in Keego Harbor, MI

A bold and graphic modern aquatint etching in colors titled "Kalasa V" by Robert Kelly. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of 5/50 on the bottom left. Published in 1985. Kelly's work intricately combines influences of the Bauhaus from Van Doesburg to Mondrian, with those of Schwitters and Klee, Kelly weds hints of the historical with the contemporary. His play of edges, angles, and cuts creates a tension and an intuitive logic to the placement of line and form. Kelly's work investigates the idea of doubleness through images that reflect, oppose, or mimic each other. Dimensions: 32"w x 1.5"d x 37"h (framed). In very good vintage condition. Robert Kelly (1956- ) paintings have been acquired by public and private collections in Europe and the United States, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, Smith College Art Museum, Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, The Fogg Museum, The Margulies Collection, and the McNay Art Museum. Kelly has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, North Africa, the Near East, and Nepal. His work often incorporates unusual materials from his journeys, among them vintage posters and printed antique...
