About the Item

UNTITLED (Mushroom), CA. 1960 Black ink on Strathmore-Velin H 21 W 27.8 (excl. frame) With certificate of authenticity of the estate Harry Bertoia by Celia Bertoia, Utah, 01.06.2022 (in copy). Presented in a newly commissioned handmade wooden frame. Description An exceptional original drawing by Harry Bertoia, executed circa 1960, revealing the artist's extraordinary ability to translate the rhythms of nature into a rich and expressive abstract composition. Through a dense network of gestural lines, Bertoia evokes the movement and structure of foliage without ever describing it literally, creating an image that exists somewhere between observation and abstraction. Although internationally celebrated for his iconic Diamond Chair (1952) for Knoll, Harry Bertoia always considered himself first and foremost an artist and sculptor. Drawing formed the foundation of his creative practice, allowing him to investigate the organic structures, rhythms and natural phenomena that would later emerge in his monumental sculptures and celebrated Sonambient sound works. These drawings are therefore not merely studies, but fully resolved works that offer an intimate insight into his artistic thinking. Born in Italy and later emigrating to the United States, Bertoia studied at the legendary Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he worked alongside Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll, Eero Saarinen and other pioneers who shaped post-war American design. While his furniture became icons of twentieth-century design, museums and collectors have increasingly recognised his sculpture and works on paper as equally significant contributions to post-war abstraction. His work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous other international institutions. Executed with remarkable confidence and spontaneity, this drawing demonstrates the same balance between structure and freedom that defines Bertoia's sculpture. The composition possesses a distinctly sculptural quality, with layers of line creating both depth and movement. It is an outstanding example of the artist's exploration of nature as an abstract language and represents a rare opportunity to acquire an original work on paper by one of the twentieth century's most influential artist-designers. With its organic rhythm, rich tonal depth and sculptural quality, Untitled (Bushes) is an outstanding example of Bertoia's ability to dissolve the boundaries between drawing and sculpture. Condition Excellent, untouched original condition. The work has recently been presented in a new, handmade wooden frame that complements the composition while preserving its original character. The sheet displays beautifully with strong tonal contrast and a fresh appearance. No restoration has been undertaken. shipping: Will be insured shipped, costs depending on location and can be calculated later.
