About the Item

Study for Altar Carpet, Roskilde Cathedral by Susette Holten (b. Skovgaard), Denmark, 1901 Pencil and watercolour on paper, depicting five young angels at harvest arranged around a central figure, their flowing garments suffused with pale light against glimpses of a distant lake and drifting clouds; the composition bordered by a continuous rose garland with scrolling ornament on a dark ground, framed within the original gilt wood moulding. Executed in 1901 as a preparatory design for the altar carpet of Roskilde Cathedral, one of the few religious commissions undertaken by the artist. Although the woven textile was ultimately replaced in 1977 by a carpet designed by Anna Thommesen, the present study survives alongside only one other known preparatory sketch and archival photographs of the completed textile, as documented in Susette Holten født Skovgaard – Den glemte søster (2013). Susette Holten (1863–1937) was a pioneering Danish painter and decorative artist, daughter of Golden Age painter P.C. Skovgaard and sister to Joakim and Niels Skovgaard. Excluded from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts on account of her sex, she studied privately with Carl Thomsen, Lauritz Tuxen, and Frans Schwartz. Working at the intersection of Skønvirke, Japonism, and Symbolism, she developed a poetic visual language in which nature, human presence, and spiritual meaning are inseparable. Her obituary described her as “the dryad of the Skovgaard family” — a tribute to her lifelong devotion to landscape, flora, and the cycles of the natural world. Measurements: Height: 44 cm (17.3 in) — framed Width: 56 cm (22 in) — framed Height: 34 cm (13.4 in) — unframed Width: 45 cm (17.7 in) — unframed The work is in good original condition, mounted in the original gilt wood frame.
