About the Item

A compelling pair of abstract paintings by American artist Charles Boggs (1921–2010), executed in Paris and dated 1952. These works originate from one of the most important periods of the artist’s career. In the early 1950s, Boggs relocated to Paris, joining the vibrant postwar artistic community that attracted painters, sculptors, and intellectuals from around the world. The city offered an atmosphere of experimentation and creative freedom, and it was here that Boggs developed the distinctive visual language that would define much of his later work. During his years in Paris, Boggs became associated with a circle of notable artists that included Stephen Pace, Beauford Delaney, and Edgard Pillet. Immersed in the artistic energy of the School of Paris, he explored abstraction through rhythm, color, and gesture, creating compositions that balanced structure with spontaneity. Dated 1952, these paintings belong to the beginning of that formative Paris period. The compositions display a dynamic interplay of line, form, and color, revealing an artist in the process of discovering a confident and highly personal voice. The bold graphic elements, layered forms, and vibrant palette demonstrate the influence of postwar European modernism while retaining an unmistakably individual character. Presented together, the paintings create a compelling visual dialogue. While each work stands strongly on its own, the pair offers a rare opportunity to acquire two related examples from a pivotal moment in the artist’s development. An important and decorative pair of mid-century abstract paintings, created in Paris during a defining chapter in the life and career of Charles Boggs. Dated: 1952 Place of Origin: Paris, France.
