Charles ALFRED Hadfield (Artist - b.c.1856) - Exceptional antique Orientalist watercolor portrait painting on paper (laid down on card) - hand painted - depicting a young Middle Eastern woman in a turban - signed and dated verso - contained in an antique Victorian hardwood frame with patterned and gold gilded liner and glass (all likely original to the painting) - United Kingdom - circa 1911. Excellent antique condition - strong color with no loss, damage or restoration to the painting - antique/period hardwood frame with scuffs and scratches and minor damage/loss to the gilded liner - replaced dust cover - signs of age and use. Painting Size - 8 1/8" (20.6 cm.) Wide x 10 1/8" (25.8 cm.) High. Frame Size/Dimensions - Medium - 12 1/8" (30.8 cm.) Wide x 14 1/8" (36 cm.) High x 2 1/2" (6.4 cm.) Deep. Charles Alfred Hadfield - Born circa 1856, he enrolled as a student in the Painting School of the Royal Academy of Art in London, U.K. on the 6th of April, 1881. He exhibited once at the R.A. in the annual summer exhibition of 1882 : Catalogue No. 943. A Syrian Arab (possibly this painting?). He lived near Kensington Palace at 13a Pembridge Place, London, U.K.

A fine orientalist pencil and watercolor heightened with gum Arabic on paper figure of "A Middle-Eastern Beauty at Rest" depicting a young maiden resting on a Persian rug laid down as a bed while holding a tambourine and next to a Moroccan ivory-inlaid octagonal table with a tea pot on top. Signed and inscribed 'Ballesio Roma Tivoli' (upper right).
