About the Item

Executed in a bold post-war modernist style, the composition appears to depict figures gathered around a market stall or street vendor, rendered through energetic brushwork and an almost abstract arrangement of colour and line. The painting is characterised by its dynamic palette of deep reds, burnt oranges, olive greens, cream and black, with vigorous gestural marks creating a powerful sense of movement and rhythm. Rather than describing the scene in fine detail, Angelo reduces the figures and surrounding architecture to expressive forms, allowing colour and texture to convey the atmosphere of a bustling urban setting. Paint has been applied with confidence and spontaneity, producing a richly textured surface that reflects the influence of European Expressionism during the immediate post-war years. Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he also maintained a parallel career as a painter.
