About the Item

This set of four antique hand painted pottery tiles are all unsigned, so no specific artist can be identified, but are presumed to have been produced in Italy in circa 1790 in the period Baroque style. The four tiles show hand painted vignettes of caricatures of naked men and women several of which are dressed as Monks and Nuns actively participating in orgies and engaged in multiple sex acts on each tile. The tiles are made of a dense dark brown heavy clay with thick muted toned glaze on top with sepia toned figures, each having a vibrant orange border. Each tile is titled at the bottom in Italian in script, and loosely translated in the order of their posting read: The Comforter of the Nuns., Preparing to Hit the Target., Women's Benefits., and Nun's Consoler respectively. These were extremely risque for the period and even to today's social morays and poke fun at the sanctity of the Christian traditions and doctrine. There is unfortunately no provenance for these four tiles but presume they may have once adorned the wall of a Roman bath house or private grotto.
