About the Item

A pair of Giovanni Domenico Campiglia (1692–1768) prints of Lucilla & Bacchus. Dating to the late 18th century this pair of Intaglio prints are taken from the multi-volume Musei Capitolini, the Capitoline Museums first catalogue. Campiglia’s highly detailed works catalogued the museum artefacts with striking detail, becoming prized positions of Grand Tour travellers. On the left, Lucilla, the second daughter of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. On the right, The youth Antinous, often deified as Bacchus. Both framed with glass, fitted with string on back. Cream matte with black cores, gold and grey embellishments on each mount. The frames are a light wash over wood with gilt inner, and black speckles. The prints are marked Carlo Gregori inc. Carlo Gregori (1702 – 1759) was born in Lucca, hailing from a family of engravers. Studying under Johann Jakob Frey before pursuing a career in Florence, he made prints after Old Master paintings and portraits. Giovanni Domenico Campiglia (1692–1768) Campiglia was an Italian painter and engraver from Florence, active under the patronage of the House of Medici. During his career, Campiglia was employed in Rome and Florence, painting and engraving historical subjects and portraits. Campiglia worked alongside Antonio Francesco Gori for over a decade on a collection of images of all the famous artists of Florence that was published in 1734. Pope Clement XII summoned Campiglia to Rome to work on his multi-volume Musei Capitolini with historian Giovanni Gaetano Bottari to produce His highly finished drawings of antique and famous statues of Rome.
