About the Item

Harris Strong Large Sculptural Shell Mixed-Media Fiber Art, circa 1980s Harris Strong sculptural shell mixed-media fiber art composition, produced by Harris G. Strong, Inc. of Ellsworth, Maine, circa 1980s. This large American wall work combines applied sections of coarse woven fabric with layers of ivory and warm taupe pigmented texture medium on canvas. The surface is organized as an abstract geometric field of overlapping rectangular panels. Areas of exposed textile weave contrast with raised passages worked into parallel lines, curved bands, and concentric circles. Five embedded relief elements resemble fragmented scallop shells or fossil forms, their radiating ribs introducing an organic counterpoint to the composition’s structured geometry. The nearly monochromatic palette directs attention toward the varied materials, recessed areas, and changing shadows across the sculptural surface. Harris G. Strong founded his decorative-arts company in New York in 1950 and relocated the business to Maine in 1970. Although best known for modernist ceramic tile compositions, the company also produced paintings, prints, collages, and sculptured canvas wall decorations. The original Harris G. Strong, Inc. label remains affixed to the reverse. Presented in its original slim gunmetal-finished metal frame. The composition is fitted with hanging hardware at two points and may be displayed either vertically or horizontally. Canvas measures 53 inches high by 35 inches wide by approximately 2 inches deep. Framed dimensions are 54 inches high by 36 inches wide by 2 inches deep when displayed vertically. In good vintage condition, with minor surface variation and wear consistent with age and the intentionally textured construction.
